To meditate effectively, you'll need to break away from your stressful world, even if only for a brief time period. Turn your cell phone off, shut down your PC and put the answering machine on silent. There should not be any interruptions during your meditation time.

Meditation can be a wonderful antidote for technology's intrusion into your daily life. There have been recent studies that show that if you meditate for twenty minutes twice a day, you can realistically reduce blood vessel blockages, which leaves you at a lower risk level for strokes and heart attacks.

You'll want to select a calm and serene area in your home for meditation techniques. This will be your own sanctuary, quiet and calm, and very peaceful. Furnish this area with icons or objects that have a spiritual meaning, so it's like a little shrine. These icons should help you ease into a contemplative state of mind. If you live near the ocean, that is a perfect place to meditate, with the surf rolling in and out. A shady forest area will work as well.

Meditation techniques also include the way to sit. The traditional meditation posture is sitting with folded legs and your hands resting on your knees or in your lap. This is not essential – any way of sitting that is comfortable for you will work. You can even meditate while you're driving, but not usually in rush hour traffic, when your attention should be fully on the road.

Keeping your eyes open while you meditate will keep all of your senses open and gathering information. Your goal should not be sleep, but rather to enter a state of relaxed alertness. You don't want to enter a trance state, either. Keep your eyes relaxed, not focusing on any one thing, and let your mouth stay open a bit, too.

The time length of meditation sessions is usually about twenty minutes, but that's not as important as whether you can bring yourself to, as described by Sogyal Rinpoche, “a certain state of mindfulness and presence, where you are a little open and able to connect with your heart essence”.

Use short sessions of four or five minutes during your initial meditations, and then take a short break for a minute or two. You may actually be meditating during the break, as you get used to the feeling. If you can set aside the same time each day for meditation, that is also beneficial. It's helpful to get up 15 or 20 minutes early in the morning to meditate, in preparation for the day. Then you can set aside a time before bedtime to release the pent-up stresses of the day. With two sessions a day, you can help your full day to be infused with joy and new meaning.
